Ward IV Councilman Charles E. Phillips Sr. who served as Councilman for nearly 25 years died Tuesday. He passed away at his home of unknown causes, according to a city spokesman.

Phillips was first elected in 1988, and served a two-year term. Re-elected in 1994, he served until his passing.

His initiatives lead to the construction of the Georgia International Convention Center and construction of the Gateway Center, which surrounds the GICC. He was also a driving force behind the 2004 renovation of Jamestown Park, which was eventually renamed in his honor in 2007.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Georgia International Convention Center with viewing 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden immediately following services.
