While college classes remain canceled because of the winter storm, cafeterias at the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and other campuses are open to serve students who made it back from winter break.

UGA has four dining halls open and is serving about 8,000 meals a day, said Mike Floyd, executive director of food services.

While students are getting a hot meal, they won't be able to use any dining trays.

"We can't put out the trays in weather like this because the students will steal them," Floyd said. "They use them to go sledding."

At Georgia Tech, the Brittain and Woodruff dining halls are serving about 3,500 meals, spokesman Matt Nagel said. The cafeterias are serving brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., he said.

Georgia State is serving students at the Freshman Hall and Piedmont North.
