Cobb donates surplus fire equipment to college
Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted to donate surplus fire protective equipment and surplus fire apparatus to Georgia Piedmont Technical College where future firefighters are trained.
This two-year post secondary institution in Clarkston operates a Fire Science and Fire Cadet Academy on their campuses. Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services has benefited from the training of some Cobb employees through these GPTC programs.
Totaling $180,000, surplus estimates are $125,000 for a ladder truck, a $25,000 fire engine and about $500 each for 60 sets of personal protective bunker gear, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus sets and several air bottles.
These 60 sets “have reached the end of their useful service lives and would bring minimal revenue if auctioned online,” Cobb Interim Department of Public Safety Director/Fire Chief Randy Crider said in a memo. “This number of sets of personal protective gear will not be known until a complete inventory is conducted of what is serviceable and what must be destroyed.”
The potential time and cost savings to CCFES per candidate is more than $24,000.
