A driver involved in last month's fatal accident with a motorcyclist in Mableton was charged Thursday with second-degree vehicular homicide, police said.

Amanda Garrett, of Austell, also was charged with failure to yield from a stop sign, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Both charges against the woman, who was 40 at the time of the crash, are misdemeanors.

Garrett was driving a white 2001 Oldsmobile Bravada eastbound in the right lane of Veterans Memorial Highway at 7:25 a.m. May 16 when she made a U-turn into the path of a motorcycle in the left lane, police said.

Vernon Patterson, 57, of Douglasville crashed his black 1979 Harley Davidson FLH into Garrett’s vehicle, and was thrown from the bike, police said. He was taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
