Cobb teen found shot at Auburn

Police have interviewed some "persons of interest" but had made no arrests by early Thursday in the death of Auburn University freshman Lauren A. Burk of Cobb County. She was found shot a few miles from the campus on Tuesday night.

An Alabama man was charged with killing Auburn University freshman Lauren Burk. He confessed to police that he shot the Marietta native during a robbery and attempted rape, according to murder warrants.

Suspect Courtney Lockhart allegedly accosted Burk on the Auburn campus to steal her credit or debit card "and/or an iPod." He was in the Army in Iraq from August 2004 to July 2005 and was court-martialed, sentenced to confinement and given a bad conduct discharge in December 2006 for charges including assault.

Lauren A. Burk of Cobb County was found shot a few miles from Auburn University, where she was a freshman. She was a graduate of Walton High School in Marietta.

Police have interviewed some "persons of interest" but had made no arrests by early Thursday in the death. The Auburn campus is stunned at the news that a freshman was gunned down.

"She was always smiling, always laughing and happy," said Walton senior Monique Osigbeme."She had a really nice smile and really pretty brown hair. Oh my God, that's really sad."

Walton principal Tom Higgins said, "She was a great leader, a great kid. She was a very, very good student."
