A Cobb County physical education teacher has resigned after his arrest in an alleged “physical altercation” with a student.

Donna Lowry, Cobb County School District spokeswoman, confirmed Tuesday that Michael Johnson resigned from his position May 26, the day jail records show he bonded out on a battery charge.

A warrant from a school district law enforcement officer says that Johnson allegedly pulled a student out of lunch at South Cobb High School on May 18.

The warrant goes on to say that Johnson then took the student into the hallway and began to “engage in a physical altercation with the student.”

It isn’t clear whether the district sent out a notice to parents about the incident. The school system didn’t answer several questions from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution — one of which was whether or not the district had let parents know, another being how seriously the student was hurt.

“We can not comment on personnel matters,” the district said.

Lowry did say that Johnson, who lives in Mableton, started working for the school system in 2002.
