Training events to protect the community from active shooters at SunTrust Park were approved Oct. 9 by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

Since an active-shooter event is unpredictable and escalates rapidly within a community or venue, the planning and response to an active-shooter situation require security assessments, communication, incident planning and training exercises, according to Cobb County Police Chief Michael Register and Cobb County Public Safety Agency Director Sam Heaton.

The Cobb Department of Public Safety’s Training Center is preparing a realistic active-shooter training exercise to take place at the Braves Stadium, Sun Trust Park.

Given the security issues involved in such training exercises, negotiations between the Cobb Department of Public Safety and the Braves Stadium Company’s security team will decide the specific details of the exercises, including the dates and times.
