Cobb to sign immigration enforcement agreement

May 17, 2012

Next week Cobb County will become the first Georgia municipality to participate in a volunteer federal program aimed at hiring legal workers.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers program allows employers and local governments to use government tools to perform employment audits to potentially curtail the use of fake documents and employing illegal workers.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first wrote about Cobb’s efforts to join the program last year. The county already participates in the Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s 287 (g) program that allows for immigration screening of jail inmates and possible deportations.

On Tuesday, Commissioners are set to approve the IMAGE agreement with ICE.
