Smyrna and Vinings will receive more coverage from public safety communications with the construction of a $2 million public safety tower.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners decided 5-0 Tuesday to build this 236-foot tower at the 4800 block of Camp Highlands Road in Smyrna.

There is “an urgent need” to improve the public safety communication coverage for Vinings and Smyrna, according to Cobb Emergency Communications Director Destiny O. Davidson and Cobb Public Safety Director Sam D. Heaton in a Tuesday memo to Cobb County Manager Rob Hosack. The current public safety communications system was built in 1993, they added.

Funding will come from the 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.
