Cobb County and Marietta high school seniors will have to wait a little longer to celebrate one of the most important milestones in their lives.

Traditional, in-person graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020 have been postponed in the Cobb County and Marietta City school systems due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both school systems have been closed since March 16 due to the pandemic, and have replaced traditional classroom lessons with digital learning efforts.

Marietta High School will host its graduation ceremony on Friday, July 24 at Northcutt Stadium, “assuming we are allowed to hold the ceremony based upon health and safety guidelines and policies at that time,” said school system spokeswoman Jen Brock.

Cobb County schools said on its website that it intends to "recognize and honor the graduating class of 2020 in a memorable way."

The system added that it’s considering both virtual and in-person graduation ceremonies as alternative and it will provide an update on its decision by June 1.
