A Cobb County judge sentenced a 34-year-old Acworth man to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Gabriel Alvarez was given three life sentences Wednesday for raping a female relative, according to a news release from the Cobb district attorney’s office. The abuse began when the girl was eight years old.

This all came to light when she told her boyfriend about the abuse, and he convinced her to go to Acworth police.

Alvarez was arrested in August 2016.

It wasn’t just rape. Alvarez would expose himself to the girl while she was on the couch watching television, molest her while she was sleeping and force her to watch pornography with him, according to a warrant.

His most brazen attack came when she was 11 years old and came home from school to find Alvarez hiding behind a door in only his underwear.

She ran, but he dragged her into a bedroom and covered her mouth and nose with his hands and a rag, yelling at her to be quiet so her friends outside wouldn’t hear, the warrant said.

The girl told investigators she thought she was going to die.

When she was 12, prosecutors said, the girl told her mother and sisters about the abuse.

Nothing happened.

The girl’s mother denied ever being told her about the attacks.

The jury deliberated less than two hours before convicting Alvarez on April 20.
