The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted to spend $8.8 million for new public safety vehicles, including fully equipped autos, vans and trucks.

In April, the commissioners agreed to spend $3 million for the capital lease of 66 vehicles to begin the take-home program.

This program is designed to encourage officers to stay employed with the county and to improve public safety coverage during shift changes.

This second lease of $8.8 million will be split between the police department at $7,563,445 for 167 vehicles and the sheriff’s office at $1,236,555 for 25 vehicles.

Funding will come from the 2016 special purpose local option sales tax.
