The closing date on one parcel of property, which City Schools Decatur has under contract, has been given a 90-day extension, with the expectation that closing on a second, contiguous parcel will get a similar delay.

Both parcels are on Talley Street in southeast Decatur totaling about six acres with a price tag of $1.15 million per acre.

Superintendent David Dude said he wants additional time to complete the due diligence process, which was originally supposed to end this week. The due diligence determines in part if the property—once a storage site for automobiles — needs an environmental remediation.

The extension moves the closing date back to June.

Former Superintendent Phyllis Edwards envisioned a combination K-3 school and 4/5 Academy for the site, which she anticipated opening by 2018-19 or earlier. But Dude said Tuesday there are currently no plans for the property.

“If we had a specific project planned,” Dude said, “we’d be more aggressive on closing. But we don’t, so we’ve got extra time to take.”
