Clayton Schools on Wednesday announced that graduation will be held at the end of June while prom for the 2019-2020 school year has been cancelled.

Graduation, which was supposed to be held May 21-23 at the Georgia International Convention Center, will instead shift to June 25-26 at Tara, Twelve Oaks and Southern Crescent football stadiums.

Whether seniors will walk the stage to get their diploma, however, will depend on guidelines for social distancing. If gatherings of 10 or more people are still prohibited and social distancing guidelines remain in place, the district may go to virtual graduations June 25-27, Clayton Schools leaders said.

“District leadership is gathering as much information as possible to share with stakeholders,” the school system said Wednesday.

In making the graduation announcement, the district also said all non-graduation senior class activities, including proms, have been cancelled.

“Questions related to this action should be directed to the student’s school leadership team,” the district said.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
