The Clayton County Animal Control facility remained closed to new animals Tuesday pending test results for canine influenza, also known as “dog flu.”
According to the Clayton County Police Department, the facility is treating all animals with the antibiotic doxycycline and conducting "suggested cleaning procedures" while it awaits results from the tests that were administered after a possible health risk was identified Sunday.
The animal control facility will be closed to any intake or outtake of animals until the results arrive from Athens, Deputy Chief Michael J. Register said in a news release. Alternative housing arrangements have been made with surrounding animal control facilities for animals that are taken into custody in the interim.
“We ask that the community and all concerned continue to be patient and understanding,” Register said. “In addition, we want to assure the public that we are working diligently with medical personnel and other facilities to protect the health of our animals.”
Canine influenza is a respiratory disease in dogs that is commonly spread in kennels or shelters. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been no documented cases of the disease in humans.
