During record cold temps on Jan. 7, 2014, the demand for natural gas in Lawrenceville exceeded peak day estimates. As a result, approximately 1,700 customers lost gas supply for about a day. In the past year, Lawrenceville added 27 telemetry points and 10 regulator stations to monitor gas pressure and provide feeder connections to underserved neighborhoods.

From these measures, the gas department has determined a need for a new delivery point from the Transco Pipeline to meet demand. Total improvements are anticipated to run $19 million. The city council is evaluating funding options. Customers can likely anticipate a rate hike, since the last increase occurred 12 years ago. Lawrenceville currently has the third lowest gas rates in the state, according to the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia.
