The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved supporting roundabouts in the Georgia Department of Transportation’s long-range planning for the interchange ramps of I-575 at Howell Bridge Road in Ball Ground.

GDOT had requested a letter from the county indicating its support before it pursued the roundabout idea, according to a staff report to commissioners.

The proposal is “conceptual only – no project is currently planned,” County Manager Jerry Cooper told commissioners.

The letter states that if GDOT selects the roundabout as “the preferred concept alternative,” “we would agree to pay for the electricity to power the lights around the interchange as well of maintenance of any landscaping,” Cooper said.

Staff also noted correspondence with Ball Ground. City Manager Eric Wilmarth said in a memo to the county that “we would much rather have a roundabout at Howell Bridge/Ball Ground Highway,” currently a four-way stop, “but (have) no issues with what they (GDOT) are proposing.”
