The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday evening voted to sell a long-vacant downtown building that formerly housed county administrative offices.

The Jones Mercantile Building will be sold to Jones Mercantile LLC for $1,768,000. Plans are to turn the building into an animation studio that would be home to several hundred employees. The building has sat vacant since late 2008, when the county moved its offices to a new headquarters on Bluffs Parkway.

An earlier plan to sell the building to Atlanta-based Westbridge Partners, which planned to use the building as a mixed-use facility, fell through in 2013.

Also Tuesday, commissioners approved a $143,600 professional services agreement for design, engineering, bid assistance and construction management for a new animal shelter intake facility.
