The Cherokee County School Board has approved an agreement with a local unit of the Marine Corps League that will make scholarships available to outstanding Junior ROTC high school graduates.

The partnership is with Marine Corps League Major General Warren R. Johnson Detachment 1311, Woodstock.

According to the agreement, the school district will nominate scholarship candidates; waive rental fees for the use of track and field facilities for the league’s annual fundraising run; and promote detachment programs such as awards, scholarships and contests and the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.

The league, in turn, will award cash scholarships; assist with school Veterans Day programs, as requested; provide schools with a list of veterans available as classroom speakers, and activities; participate in school functions when league members are available; and provide opportunities for high school senior projects and community service.

Both parties also will explore and pursue joint grant opportunities in their best interest.
