The Cherokee County School District has taken the first step toward expanding Mill Creek Middle School by notifying the Georgia Department of Education about proposed funding for the project.
The School Board approved the capital outlay funding application at its recent meeting. The district plans to use its Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and state construction funds for the expansion.
The project would add 16 regular classrooms, four science labs, a family consumer science classroom and a global learning theater to the middle school. The district seeks $1.9 million in state funds for the $4 million project.
Construction is planned to begin next spring. Mill Creek Middle, at 442 Arnold Mill Road, Woodstock, opened in August 2009.
