Cherokee County will reimburse Northside Hospital-Cherokee a total of $170,624 in property taxes the hospital says it shouldn’t have had to pay as a tax-exempt entity.

The Board of Commissioners recently approved the hospital’s request for reimbursing part of the $322,402 it paid in 2016 property taxes. The tax bill was for the hospital’s new campus under construction at Interstate 575 and Ga. 20 in Canton.

In a letter to the County Board, hospital CEO William M. Hayes noted that the hospital has never paid a property tax at its present location in Canton. Hayes requested a refund, calculated by subtracting the land and hospital building he said was exempt from the tax at the new hospital site.

Northside had been taxed for all 133.9 acres and a 525,847 square feet building at the new location, Hayes said. The tax should instead have been based on 91.9 acres and 125,000 square feet of building, plus a parking deck, he said.
