The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $30,000 contract to have Cumming artist Gregory Johnson create a public sculpture for Patriots Park.

Johnson was one of two local artists who responded within budget to the county’s request for proposals for Patriots Park, which opened last spring on 33 acres at 1485 Kellogg Creek Road, Acworth.

“Rather than install a catalog, generic monument, the county decided to look for a qualified artist to create an original piece that seeks to capture the sacrifice embodied by American patriots who have stood in the gap for their country, for one another, and for the cause of liberty,” Bryan Reynolds, director of the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency, said in a report to commissioners.

Johnson is to deliver refined concepts in November, followed by a public input meeting in early December, selection of the final design in January, and the project completed April 19, 2018, according to the county’s contract with the artist.
