Cherokee County commissioners have awarded a $2.7 million contract to reconstruct the intersection of Ga. 140 and Lower Burris/Puckett Creek Road between Canton and Waleska.

Bartow Paving Co. Inc. submitted the lowest of four bids to rebuild the crossroads, providing right- and left-turn lanes on Ga. 140 and left-turn lanes on Lower Burris and Puckett Creek roads, according to a staff report to the county Board of Commissioners.

Also, a traffic signal will be installed, and Byrd Mountain Road will be relocated to the east of the existing intersection to tie into Lower Burris a safe distance away, staff said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded Cherokee a $350,000 Local Maintenance Improvement Grant to help pay for the work. Waleska has agreed to contribute $150,000 to relocate a water main. Construction is expected to last about 270 days or nine months.
