A proposed “social host” ordinance amendment — holding party hosts responsible for shutting down underage drinking — is the subject of a Cherokee County Board of Commissioners public hearing expected to be held Tuesday, Dec. 18.

County commissioners recently took up a measure that seeks to prohibit “social hosting” — events where people over the age of 21 allow underage drinking on their premises.

Hosts would be responsible for taking “reasonable steps” to prevent underage consumption of alcoholic beverages, such as controlling access to such drinks, verifying the ages of people at a gathering, supervising underage persons and remaining on the property during the event, the measure says.

If underage drinking occurs before or during the gathering, “then the social host shall make reasonable efforts to terminate the gathering including, but not limited to, contacting law enforcement to report the suspected underage consumption.” An exception is given in the event of a child and parent, in the parent’s household.
