Cherokee County is moving to abandon two thoroughfares – Revis Road and a portion of Garland Mountain Way – that are not believed to have been open to the public for at least two decades.
The Board of Commissioners determined the roads met the statutory criteria for abandonment: They have ceased to be used by the public, and their removal from the county road system would be in the public interest. Both roads are in the rural northwest corner of the county, northwest of Waleska.
Staff advised commissioners that if they did not act, adjoining property owners could demand the roads, as public thoroughfares, be brought up to current county standards. This could cost the county more than $5 million.
The county's next step will be to advertise a public hearing, likely at the commission's July 2 meeting, on the proposed abandonments. Information: https://bit.ly/2KoFLvN and https://bit.ly/2KiHaE4
