Cherokee County has awarded a $1.5 million construction contract for a roundabout on East Cherokee Drive at Gaddis Road/Chadwyck Lane.

The Board of Commissioners accepted Baldwin Paving Co. Inc.’s bid for the project. East Cherokee is a two-lane road with left- and right-turn lanes at its intersection with Gaddis and Chadwyck. The crossroads is between Canton and Free Home.

A roundabout was determined to be more effective than traffic signals for controlling speed and ensuring a safe crossing for pedestrians, Public Works Director Geoffrey E. Morton said in an agenda summary for commissioners.

Baldwin submitted the lowest of three bids. The work is expected to be substantially completed in six months.
