The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $95,000 at-risk construction agreement with Ajax Building Corp. of Georgia for the pre-construction portion of the Adult Detention Center expansion in Canton.

Ajax submitted the highest-scoring as well as the lowest-cost bid, $2.48 million, for construction management of the project.

“This agreement contains an option to accept additional construction management services to complete the ADC expansion and will be brought before the Board of Commissioners for approval at a later date,” staff said in a report to commissioners.

The county previously awarded a $1.59 million contract to Studio 8 Design for architectural and engineering services for the project.

The detention center, at 498 Chattin Drive, has a 512-bed detention facility completed in 2002, and a 96-bed jail dating to the early 1980s. The project will include new medical housing, a secondary kitchen and secondary laundry, and renovations to existing facilities including the main lobby.
