The Cherokee County Sheriff’s office said a county jail inmate died Saturday at Northside Cherokee Hospital.

Sheriff’s officials said 32-year-old Jose Castillo-Ramirez had been taken to the hospital after he was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell on July 4. Ramirez was resuscitated at the time but later succumbed to his injuries.

The Canton man had been in custody since April when he was arrested on aggravated assault, false imprisonment, disorderly conduct and other charges. No other inmates were in his cell at the time. The body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy and that agency will do a follow-up investigation.
