Cherokee County has retained an engineering consultant to study two of the busier interchanges along I-575 and suggest improvements to relieve congestion.

The Board of Commissioners recently approved a $32,000 “scoping” contract with Moreland Altobelli Associates Inc. for the I-575 interchanges at Towne Lake Parkway (Exit 8) and Ridgewalk Parkway (Exit 9), both in Woodstock.

The consultant was directed to study traffic volumes, turning movements, accident histories, signal timings and other factors, and to identify possible solutions, their costs and how long they’d take to implement.

At peak times, rush-hour motorists exiting I-575 back up onto the interstate southbound at Towne Lake and northbound at Ridgewalk, while drivers on local streets trying to turn left to enter I-575 at both locations also cause tie-ups, according to a staff report. The problem extends to weekends and holidays at Ridgewalk because of the nearby Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta.
