The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night approved a subdivision rezoning request that saw the county and city of Holly Springs squaring off.
Commissioners unanimously approved Bethany Properties Group’s request to rezone roughly 21 acres on Vaughn Road to residential zero lot line designation in order to build 64 single-family detached homes with a density of three units per acre.
Approval came after several residents of the areas spoke, voicing displeasure at the density of the planned development and concern over the demands they say it will place on roads, schools and utilities.
The project became a bone of contention after the city of Holly Springs annexed the tract. The county filed suit, claiming the annexation was illegal. The property was returned to the county for a zoning decision after a tentative settlement was reached.
