An architect will begin preparing Phase I construction documents for the L.B. Ahrens Recreation Center at Cherokee Veterans Park, Canton, under a $444,000 design contract approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners.

Though its bid was not the lowest, Lose & Associates Inc.’s proposal scored the highest of 13 submitted, staff told commissioners. The board approved a budget amendment of $466,200 for the design work, including a 5 percent county-controlled contingency.

The project’s $9.75 million first phase will have a double gymnasium, open fitness area, aerobics/dance studio, provisions to add a climbing wall, locker/restrooms and family changing room, community meeting room, two multi-purpose classrooms and offices in about 33,000 square feet, according to the architect’s professional services agreement.

The design is to be completed within six months of the notice to proceed, with construction beginning immediately afterward and completed within 12 to 14 months. Future phases may include a second double gym and swimming pools.
