The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $323,165 operating assistance contract with the state for the county’s on-demand transportation service for elderly and disabled residents.

The contract with the Georgia Department of Human Services is for the Cherokee Area Transportation System for the 2018 fiscal year. The county’s obligation is $132,000.

The dollar amount is about 20 percent less than the $409,591 budgeted last year, but “DHS hopes to have (the funds) in the first amendment to the contract by this September/October,” according to a staff report to county commissioners.

State funds are reimbursed to the county monthly and are determined by the trips requested by the customers, staff said.

CATS provides on-demand, fixed-route and van pool services. It is funded by the county, state and Federal Transit Administration, according to the CATS website.
