Anticipating the annual surge of lost dogs and cats on July 5, the Cherokee County Animal Shelter announced three days of free microchipping for pets ahead of the Independence Day holiday.

"Pets frightened by fireworks go missing at this time more than any other," the shelter said in a Facebook posting. "This year, we want to change that and keep more pets safe at home."

The service, by appointment only, will be offered Tuesday, June 30, and Wednesday and Thursday, July 1 and 2, at the shelter, 1015 Univeter Road, Canton. Shelter hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To book an appointment: https://bit.ly/2Z1pt0G
