Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services has opened a new fire station staffed entirely by volunteers.

Station 29 on Ga. 20 east of Canton is meant to serve the Governors Preserve area. An analysis two or three years ago in conjunction with an Insurance Service Office rating review indicated it was one of several pockets in the county that wasn’t within five road miles of a fire station, said Fire Chief Tim Prather.

Residents of the subdivision complained their insurance rates were skyrocketing as a result, with some saying they had tripled.

County officials oversaw the conversion of a building at the old fire tower location into a four-bay station with a fire truck for volunteer use. County officials said they hope the property will be used for a brand-new fire station and 24-hour crew in the future.
