Cherokee County has awarded a $70,000 architect’s contract to design renovations for the Hickory Flat Gymnasium.

The Board of Commissioners approved the contract with KRH Architects to design the upgrades. The 9,000-square-foot gym building, next to Hickory Flat Elementary School, is leased by the county from the Cherokee County School District. It has a basketball court, stage, restroom, concessions stand and storage areas.

KRH is tasked with estimating costs, preparing construction documents, permitting, bidding and construction administration.

Public meetings and an online survey by the county last year found “the overwhelming majority of the public input indicated a desire to renovate the building and use it as a community center with programs and events,” according to a staff report to commissioners.

Necessary upgrades, staff said, “may include, but are not necessarily limited to, structural repairs, pest control, ADA compliance, HVAC, plumbing and electrical repairs, and interior/exterior modifications to the building.”
