Cherokee commission seeks HOST changes

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution seeking passage of an updated Homestead Option Sales Tax measure by the Georgia General Assembly. The resolution asks the county’s legislative delegation to push for a new alternative to current legislation governing the tax, calling the current measure unclear and confusing.

The proposal would allow counties to put the HOST proposal on the ballot, with collected revenue used to roll back property taxes on homesteaded residential properties, possibly to zero.

The resolution approved earlier this week seeks changes in several respects including the timing of tax collections, the wording of ballot questions and clarification of how generated revenue would apply to property tax relief.

Cherokee voters turned down a HOST proposal in 2012. County officials have faulted what they said was confusing ballot language.
