Local officials, business leaders and county commissioners took part in a Tuesday groundbreaking for Veterans Park, a 149-acre facility to be constructed along Cumming Highway in northeast Cherokee County.
It’s planned as one of the largest active parks in Cherokee, with more than 75 acres set aside for that purpose. The park will include two natural grass athletic fields and one with artificial turf, two tennis and two pickleball courts, a playground, skate park, two paved trails, a large open meadow and maintenance, concession and restroom buildings. Plans are to finish the Phase 1 construction project in fall 2017.
The Board of Commissioners awarded an $11.7 million contract for construction to Reeves Young LLC of Suwanee at its Jan. 19 meeting.
