Cherokee County has agreed to pay the Georgia Department of Transportation $31,000 to oversee a “scoping phase” study of a proposed Ga. 372 Spur bypass around Ball Ground.

County commissioners approved a Project Oversight Agreement with the GDOT, following their decision last summer to pay $246,600 to engineering consultant Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. to identity the feasibility and estimated costs for the project.

Roughly 1.7 miles long, the bypass would reroute truck traffic around downtown Ball Ground. It would begin southeast of downtown near Ga. 372 and Flatbottom Trail; cross Northridge Road and the Georgia Northeastern Railroad; and end at Ball Ground Highway and Howell Bridge Road.

GDOT has assigned an in-house project manager and subject matter experts to assist the county. The study is expected to be completed in early 2020.

“We hope that through this scoping work and assistance from GDOT, that maybe there will be federal funds in the fairly near future to design and build this bypass,” County Manager Jerry Cooper said.
