The cities of Doraville and Chamblee have received a Livable Centers Initiative study grant for $96,000 from the Atlanta Regional Commission.

The LCI grant will help recipients develop plans for the construction and improvement of their cities. Once the studies are complete, these communities will become eligible for transportation funding to implement their plans. The LCI program is funded with federal transportation dollars. The grants provide 80 percent of funding for each study, with the recipient making a 20 percent match. This study supplements existing plans in both cities and will help develop a plan to revitalize Buford Highway, such as Nexus, a multi-use project planned on the former site of the old K-Mart.

“We look forward to working with Chamblee on this LCI study,” says Doraville Mayor Donna Pittman. “I feel certain this study will drive interest in redevelopment along Buford Highway, as our previous LCI study did for the former General Motors property. A coordinated action like this will certainly enhance our ability to make Buford Highway a showcase for the entire region.”

The nine LCI planning grants awarded this year include six major plans already underway and three supplemental grants to help continue existing studies. ARC awarded $800,000 in LCI study grants to nine metro Atlanta communities and $12 million in transportation funding to 11 other communities that have completed LCI studies.
