Smyrna will stop collecting plastics numbers 3 through 7 from their recycling programs (both curbside and the recycling center), beginning March 1.

The suspension is due to market conditions which, at present time, “do not show a viable market for these kinds of plastics,” according to a city statement.

They include plastic tubing; children’s toys; plastic trays and furniture; plastic wrappings; grocery bags; bags that hold newspapers, sliced bread loaves and fresh produce; food containers for yogurt, sour cream and margarine; straws; rope; carpet; bottle caps; styrofoam products; packing peanuts and products stamped with a 7.

Plastics numbers 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE) are still being accepted - typically soda and water bottles, detergent bottles and milk jugs.

Questions can be directed to Smyrna Recycling Center Staff at 770-431-2869.
