A cat was set on fire in south Fulton County, and a $2,500 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever did it.

Grayson, a 2-year-old gray-and-white male, was found injured about three weeks ago in an apartment complex in Union City. Someone had poured a flammable liquid on the cat and set him on fire. His back, sides and stomach were burned, according to the Fayette County Humane Society, which rescued the animal after a resident call to report it.

The Atlanta Humane Society offered the reward, funded by the Holland M. Ware Charitable Trust, to those who contribute information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the attack. Tipsters are asked to call the Society at 404-875-5331.

"This is a horrific act of animal cruelty," Humane Society president William Shaheen said in a press release. "It is imperative that those responsible for this terrible act are caught so that we can prevent this form of happening to another innocent animal."

Grayson is at VCA Braelinn Village Animal Hospital in Peachtree City receiving treatment for burns and for FIV, the feline version of HIV. Veterinaries expect that the cat will be ready to move to a shelter or a new home in two or three weeks.

"We hope to find a home for him. We were worried that he wasn't able to fight the burns, but he is going to recover fine. Since he is positive to FIV, he has to be the only cat in the house," said Kelly Vick of the Fayette Humane Society.

The Fayette group is accepting donations toward Grayson's care. So far, its volunteers have given their own money to pay for the animal's medical expenses.
