Alcohol played a role in the deaths of twin 15-month-old girls found in their father’s SUV in Carrollton Thursday evening, police said Friday.

Asa North has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct in the deaths of Ariel Roxanne and Alaynah Maryanne North.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after 6:30 p.m. Thursday and found the twins unresponsive. Their father, along with neighbors, had placed the siblings in a kiddie pool with shallow water, surrounded by ice packs. Another neighbor said he had administered CPR but it was too late.

The twins were taken to Tanner Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead soon after arrival. Police also took an uncle, Travis North, to the hospital due to “extreme intoxication.” North had to be handcuffed after trying to strike one of the officers, according to the Carroll police incident report.

Carrollton Police Capt. Chris Dobbs said investigators believe Asa North had also been drinking Thursday afternoon.

“No one in the family, mothers, grandmothers, think he did this intentionally,” said Dobbs, adding that Asa North was “visibly shaken” but was cooperative with police.

His first court appearance is scheduled Saturday. Police hope to have results from the autopsy, performed Friday morning at GBI headquarters, by then, Dobbs said.
