A suspected carjacker is dead and his victim in critical condition following a Wednesday night shootout in south DeKalb County.

The incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. in the 2100 block of Sterling Ridge Court, in a neighborhood off Snapfinger Road, according to DeKalb police spokesman Jason Gagnon.

"This appears to have been an attempted carjacking incident where both the victim and the suspect exchanged several gunshots," Gagnon said.

"The suspect was able to commandeer the victim's vehicle but wrecked shortly after fleeing the scene," Gagnon said. "The suspect is deceased and the victim is in critical condition."

The names of the victim and suspect, both males in their 20s, have not been released.
