Caregiver charged after alleged stabbing by mentally ill man
Snellville police have charged a caregiver at a personal care home with reckless conduct after one of the men in her charge allegedly stabbed another resident.
Caulette Mason Green failed to give a schizophrenic and bipolar resident his medications before the man allegedly stabbed in the forehead a fellow resident who had tried to intervene in a dispute over cigarettes, police said. The victim survived the attack.
Preston Horn was charged with aggravated assault and simple assault in the incident, which happened the early morning of Nov. 26. He is being held without bond in the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
Horn was a resident of a personal care home operated by Best Care of Georgia on the 3000 block of Sonya Lane, police said. Several homes on the street are care facilities, Channel 2 Action News reported.
An investigation found that Horn “was not given proper medication for at least three to four days” before the attack, Snellvile police Detective James McDonald told Channel 2. After she was charged, Green voluntarily surrendered the license for her facility, he said.
Police have had to respond to more than 80 calls to care homes on Sonya Lane so far this year. Some were simply because residents hadn’t taken their medicine, McDonald said. “It’s definitely putting a strain on our calls for service and obviously how we respond to those calls,” he said.
The city of Snellville has placed a moratorium on issuing any new business licenses for personal care homes, McDonald said.
Channel 2 was attempting to reach Green’s attorney for comment.
