A Canton city official said a team using ground-penetrating radar this week at the city’s burial grounds found about 30 unknown graves in Southview Cemetery and 40 in Sunnyside Cemetery.

The probe by Omega Mapping is part of a project authored by Canton City Clerk Susan Stanton. She said she’s been unable to sell a number of plots in both cemeteries because city officials have no idea if anyone is buried in them. Stanton plans to purchase “unknown” markers for the graves located this week.

Stanton said burial lots can be returned to the city of Canton if the radar scan shows no one buried there and other requirements are met. Those include filing a petition with the courts and running a newspaper ad to try to find the current owners. Stanton said she expects to have dozens of lots available.
