The City of Canton has hired a new assistant police chief.
Major Steve Merrifield of the Cobb County Police Department will be sworn in at 2 p.m. Feb. 18 at Canton City Hall, 151 Elizabeth St. Merrifield is a Forest Park native who joined the Cobb department in 1984, serving in a variety of capacities including SWAT team commander, shift commander and creator of the department’s gang and street crime units.
Merrifield replaces former assistant chief Mark Mitchell, who became chief at the end of December.
