Canton demolition program begins
The city of Canton’s program to have dilapidated, eyesore structures razed is moving ahead, but slower than anticipated.
At its most recent meeting, City Council members considered the first two properties to be targeted and voted to move ahead to knockdown a home at 610. E. Main. Action was then delayed on a property at 622 Elmwood after resident Alberto Olivaro appeared before council and said he had a contract to buy and renovate it. The council agreed informally to hold off until late summer to allow Olivaro to finalize his plans and get the work done.
Council members previously approved $63,000 to raze dilapidated structures, following that up with a redevelopment program under which property owners can get tax incentives for rehabbing eyesores.
