Canton police have made an arrest in an overnight Saturday kidnapping case and are trying to sort out a motive.

Police Chief Mark Mitchell said a 27-year-old Canton woman and her 7-year-old son were forced into the suspect’s vehicle near her Canton home and driven to a convenience store near Interstate 575 and Bell’s Ferry Road in Cobb County after she had asked to use a restroom. After telling the store clerk she was in danger, the clerk hid her behind a cooler until a friend she had texted earlier arrived and they escaped to a nearby business.

Mitchell said subsequent detective work led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man from Hiram after he left a Marietta church Sunday. Mitchell said the victim and suspect were acquainted.
