Seeking to get a handle on possible traffic from future development, the Canton City Council has approved a moratorium through April 5 on accepting new annexation applications for properties along Ga. 140 north of Riverstone Parkway.

The council wants to examine what improvements are necessary to address the traffic of already approved developments, according to a resolution passed by the council. As there are few, if any, undeveloped properties along Ga. 140 within city limits, any further traffic “would come from future annexed properties,” the resolution says.

Staff may consult with Cherokee County and the Georgia Department of Transportation on possible improvements to Ga. 140 and to that road’s intersection with Riverstone.

The moratorium does not apply to annexation applications filed prior to Dec. 21.
