The Canton City Council has approved a policy for public storage lockers at City Hall where citizens can leave handguns or other articles while they do business with the city.

The city has not yet purchased the lockers, a Canton spokeswoman said. The lockers would be near the main entrance of City Hall.

Users will take locker keys with them, and will be solely responsible for their items and for removing them when they leave, according to the policy.

At no time will any city employee or Canton police officer handle a citizen’s handgun or other articles before or after they are stored in the lockers, the policy says. The city and police will not be responsible for stored items, but citizens will be accountable for any damage or accidental discharge of handguns before the firearm is stored or removed from the storage container.

Goods left behind and not claimed by the owner will be removed by the Canton Police Department and stored in the police evidence room. Citizens can call the police at 770-720-4883 to retrieve their belongings.
